Generation 1

1. JOSEPH1 MCKEE was born in 1825 in Dartford, Kent, England. He died on 02 May 1915 in Nimmitabel, NSW. He married Mary WHITE, daughter of John WHITE and Margaret KINCARY on 24 Jul 1859 in Cooma NSW (Church of Rome Rites). She was born before Aug 1832 in Cork, Ireland. She died on 12 Feb 1883 in Royal Arms Hotel, Nimmitabel, NSW, Australia.

Notes for Joseph McKEE:
Joseph McKee son of David McKee and Lucy Chapman. Listed on 1841 and 1851 UK Census living with parents, David and Lucy at Overy St., Dartford, Kent. Aged 18yrs in 1851 he was a confectioner and his father was a Grocer.

He migrated to Australia.

Joseph married Mary (late Moloney) alias White) who was a widow at Cooma, NSW on 24 Jul 1859 according to rites of Church of Rome. Joseph was a bachelor at the time and his occupation was Baker. When daughter Lucy was born in 1863, Joseph was a Cordial Manufacturer in Cooma NSW. The officiating Minister was M. Kavanagh and they were married in presence of James McCormack and Catherine White. Mary Moloney had been a widow so presume her maiden name was White. Copy of Marriage Cert is on file. Joseph signed but Mary, James McCormack and Catherine White all made their mark. Birthplace, and parents names etc were listed as unknown. At time of daughter Lucy's birth, they had produced 1 male living and 1 female living with 1 female deceased. This does not match the births listed above. Joseph became an Inn Keeper of the Royal Arms Hotel, Nimmitabel, NSW.

A copy of a photo I received from Patricia Marsh which was with the possessions of
Mary White McKee and passed down through the daughters. I believe the photo
to be Mary White with sister, Catherine and their mother, Margaret most likely
taken in Ireland (Cork) prior to Mary’s departure for Australia in 1855.
The resemblance with the young LucyMcKee photo is evident and makes me
think that Mary is the one on the right.

Joseph gave consent to his dau Lucy's marriage to Alfred Richards as Lucy was under the age of 21yrs.

Joseph was aged 90yrs when he died on 3 May 1915 and is buried at Nimmitabel, NSW. His wife, Mary had predeceased him in 1883.

In the Empire Sydney NSW on 8 Mar 1867: Deaths "McKEE - On the 23rd November, 1866, at her residence, Overy-place, Dartford, Kent, England, Mrs. Lucy McKee (after a painful illness of nine months), the beloved mother of Mr. Joseph McKee, of Cooma, and Mr. David McKee, of Nimitybele, New South Wales, leaving a large circle of friends to deplore their loss."

Nimmitybelle, Nimity Bell, Nimetybele, Nimoitehool and Nimoitebool.

The first records of the Nimmitabel settlement date from the 1830s. By the 1850s it had become a small village of slab and bark huts surrounded by grazing properties. In 1858 it officially became a town.

Notes for Mary WHITE:
Mary White, dau of John White and Margaret Canary (Kincary, Kincade) was born in Cork, Ireland about 1832. Mary emigrated to the Colonies arriving 11 Jan 1855, she was aged 22yrs. Other particulars listed on the passenger report state that she was a General Servant from North Chapple, Co. Cork. She could neither read nor write, had no notable incidents during her voyage and was in good physical appearance. She was Roman Catholic and had paid one pound for the journey. Her father, John was already deceased and her mother Margaret was living in the parish of Clarence (??) writing illegible. On the same voyage was another Mary White aged 20yrs and her sister, Catherine aged 18yrs who were from the City of Cork with parents Edward and Catherine living in City of Cork. The "Rajasthan" landed a total of 276 persons of whom 98 were single females.

She first married Andrew Moloney (Maloney) listed as Molony at Sydney in 1857 (refer NSW BDM 718/1857) and they appear to have travelled to the Cooma area where Andrew died the following year in 1858. Now widowed, Mary second-married Joseph McKee on 24 Jul 1859 in Cooma, NSW. She was a House Servant at time of her marriage to Joseph. Ages and parents were not listed nor birthplaces. Marriage was witnessed by James McCormack and Catherine White. Catherine was a sister to Mary and she also married at Cooma in 1859 to Hugh Whittaker.

Mary died at the Royal Arms Hotel, Nimmitabel on 12 Feb 1883 aged 51yrs and was buried at Nimmitabel on 14 Feb 1883 by Samuel Rankin (Undertaker). Burial officiated by Rev John Hayes and witnessed by Margaret McKee and Lucy McKee (her daughters). Cause of her death was Pneumonia suffered for 5 days as certified by Dr. J.L. Donovan who last saw Mary at end of January 1883. Her husband, Joseph was the informant. Mary's body was delivered to the NSW Coroner for an Inquest. Her body was received on 27 Feb 1883, her death being noted as 14 Feb 1883 and the Coroner found her to have died from Natural Causes. Mary had been in Australia (the Colonies) for 29 years and married to Joseph for 27 years, the marriage being registered at Cooma. (NSW BDM 1883/009296). Her husband survived her for many years and passed away aged 90yrs in 1915.

Margaret McKee dau of Joseph McKee and Mary Moloney (White). Margaret entered the Benedictine Religious Order at "Subiaco" on 9 Feb 1888, was Clothed on 29 Jan 1891 and Professed on 30 Nov 1893. She took the religious name of Sister Mary Romanus McKee. Her Vow Paper was hand painted and extraordinarily beautiful according to Sr. Hildegard Ryan (Archivist at Jamberoo Abbey) and a copy is held on file. Her entry in the Profession Register reads:

Sr. (later Dame) M. Romanus alias
Margaret McKee, daughter of Joseph McKee
and Mary White. Sr. Romanus is front
row on extreme Left

The four McKee daughters of Joseph and
Mary. The 5th daughter is missing, she
being Margaret, later Sr. M. Romanus.
The daughters are – Top, Mary,
Bottom, Ellen, Left, Lucy,
Right, Mary-Anne.

"I Margaret McKee in Religion Sister Mary Romanus, in acknowledgement of the favour, this day conferred on me, by the Benedictine Community of Subiaco, in admitting me into their Monastery, as a Professed Choir Sister, by the act of my Religious Profession, freely and voluntarily made by me, in the presence of his Lordship the Right Revd Joseph Higgins, Lord Bishop of Sydney and under our Mother Prioress, Mary Walburge, alias Ruth Wallis - I hereby affix my signature this 30th day of November, Anno Domini 1893. Sister Mary Romanus Alias Margaret McKee" This was handwritten by Margaret and her vow paper was handwritten in Latin as per above. Margaret's obituary in the Benedictine Archives reads as follows.

"1923, December 7, Dame (Margaret) M. Romanus McKee. Born in New South Wales on 29th September 1864. Entered "Subiaco", 9th February 1888. Clothed, 29th January 1891. Professed, 30th November 1893. Dame Romanus was for some years headmistress of the school. She was also very skilful with her hands, - at needle-work and, more unusually, at wood-carving. It was she who carved the three altar-panels in the church - the central one with the "Pax" and Gothic roses, and the side ones with Pugin roses. She also made a fine stand for one of the statues. She came from a close family which was much concerned about her during her final illness. Death came from nephritis, (kidney disease)."

She had died 7 Dec 1923 at Ryde (most likely at Subiaco but registered at Ryde), NSW aged 59yrs. Information from Sr Hildegard Ryan continues.

And regarding burial places. Her grave was at "Subiaco" Rydalmere. When the Cemetery was moved during the 1930s/40s, the remains were re-interred at North Rocks Catholic Cemetery.

They were re-interred in one mass Grave (another story). Mother Benedicta Philips, first elected Abbess, and Sr. Elizabeth Funder (Prioress) had this mass grave restored during the early 1990s, and it has been a place of pilgrimage for our community on important occasions, such as our 150 in Australia (1999). I have photographs of the gravesite. I can't send them by email, but I can scan them (I think) and make a copy for you. Or, I can send them to you and you can make a copy. I think that I have a photograph of Sr. Mary Romanus McKee in Archives. She was a gifted wood-carver, and at the moment, I am restoring some of her work done in 1905. (email dated Oct 2009)

Photos dating back to the early 1920s were obtained from the Benedictine Archives courtesy Sr Hildegard Ryan. One shows the community of Dames with Mother M Joseph and Mother M Justina and the other a group of Dames with Mother M Joseph and the peg dog.

Obituary from 1937 in Cowra Newspaper reads: "Following an operation performed about 10 days previously, the death took place at Cowra District Hospital on Tuesday morning of Mr. Alfred Sylvester Eugene Richards. He was 71 years of age. The late Mr. Richards was one of Cowra's best liked citizens. A smiling countenance and a cheery word bespoke the wonderful nature of a fine old gentleman. He had an army of friends but not a single enemy. He was a constructive character, ever ready to give assistance where it was needed, ever alert to cheer anyone struck by misfortune. His passing will be genuinely felt. In his younger days the late Mr. Richards was a keen cricketer, his batting performances on the south coastal areas being still highly regarded. With the passing of the years and growing infirmity his interest never dwindled. Every time a match was in progress at the Cowra cricket ground the old familiar figure would be noticed. He was Vice-president of the Cowra Cricket Club to the time of his death. Also a keen footballer, the late Mr. Richards represented the Country against City. Born at Bodalla on the South Coast, deceased received his early education at the local school and later attended Fort Street High School, Sydney. He later entered the Education Department and first took up duties at Square Range, Nimmitabel, on the Monaro. Here he married Miss Lucy McKee. He later transferred to Tarraganda near Bega.

In 1925 he retired from the service and came to live at Cowra, where he has resided ever since. The late Mr. Richards was a member of the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons. Bert of Bethungra, John Kenneth of Cowra, Harry of Lithgow, and Fred of Lismore, and three daughters, Sister Ausberta, St. Josephs Convent, Bondi, Mrs. O'Dwyer of Lithgow, and Mrs. A. Koychen of Milton. Another daughter, Mrs. C.A. Allen died about three years ago. The funeral moved from St Johns CE, Cowra, yesterday morning for interment in the CE portion of the Cowra cemetery. The large number of friends who followed the hearse was eloquent testimony of the high regard in which deceased was held. There were representatives of the commercial, Local Government and sporting sections of the community. Ven Archdeacon Mirrington officiated at the Church and at the graveside."
